Rob Blanchard

Who, living or dead, would you like to eat dinner with the most? And why?
Ranaldus Magnus, aka Ronald Reagan.   Talk to him about his vision for this great county and how he made it come true.  How he was able to reach across the table with the opposite party and negotiate a policy that everyone could get behind. He was known as the Great Communicator along with Margaret Thatcher and was able to end the Cold War without a single shot being fired or one life being lost.  To talk about these events and so much more would be amazing.

What is your favorite project you worked on and why?
Favorite Project was my very first one, 20 years ago.  I was a field engineer, then APM and helper to Superintendent (would not even call myself an assistant super, I was a newbie.  You know what kind of bee can’t fly…..A newbie).   Had great people looking out for me and helping me along the way.  Stubbed my toe a lot, but they were there to help me figure it out.  Fridays would get out of work at 2:00 and head to the bar with a bunch of subs for a few hours to celebrate the week.  When I entered construction, I was starting down a path I had no idea where it would take me.  The people I worked with on my first project helped me figure out that I was good at this line of work and it changed my life forever.

How did you get into construction?
Hit the proverbial fork in the road when I lost my job in the oil industry.   Was looking for part-time work putting up formwork and the guy who interviewed me said “nope, show up tomorrow with a tie-on and you are going to be working for a GC”.  Showed up the next day and 20 years later I am still doing GC work.

What is one thing on your bucket list and will you accomplish it?
Get my kids through college without any debt and be able to give them a fresh start in life where the road is wide open to them. I don’t want my kids to have to do something because they are saddled with a ton of college debt.  If they accumulate debt after school, then that is their problem.  I want to give them a clean slate and let them make their own path.   And yes – I will accomplish it.
